Obama Must Support Israel to Have Shot at Another Term
Yes, Jewish people only make up 2% of the population. But instead of baffling people with all sorts of statistics and numbers, let me just say (and this is common knowledge I am sure) that 78% of American Jews voted for Obama, and we all know how strong (and sometimes vociferous) the pro-Israel lobby is in the United States. They are a minority, but boy, they are a LOUD minority. If there is ANY group you don't want to inflame, it's the Jewish people. I am not saying this disparagingly, I am saying this truthfully. Why? Because of course, I, Simon Adam Lowenstein, am Jewish, and I know my people. The United States, specifically the Obama Administration and Democratic leaders in Congress, should reiterate their support and understanding for Israel, that as a sovereign and democratic nation it has the right to act on behalf of its national security and express its confidence that Israel can act in the best interests of its people. This is critical. We are almost two full years away from the next election, and if Obama wants another term, he cannot afford to waver. He cannot look at everything on a case-by-case basis and decide who the good guys and bad guys were. Politically speaking, he needs to choose a side and stick with it. And if he wants to be in the White House until January of 2017, he needs to come out and support Israel unflinchingly. Otherwise Republicans will gladly exploit this and use it against him. And you know? They would be right. Your move, Barack.
